The Child and the Snake

December 2025

The Child and the Snake is a side-scroller horror stealth game with rich narrative elements. It was made in Unity 2D, and utilized custom made assets in order to tell a short but unique narrative.

The Child and the Snake was made as an entry in Unity's 20th Anniversary Game Jam, with the theme of "timeless." While we did not use unity assets, our game still achieved 50th out of 433 entries to the game jam, as well as being 6th in Art.

The Child and the Snake was made by 2 people, operating together remotely over 2 different time zones.

Development Roles

What did I do for this project?

My roles in this game jam were that of the writer, narrative designer, game designer, and level designer. It was my duty to guide the overall creative vision of the game, ensuring my jam partner understood what we were going for and could tailor the other aspects of the game towards that vision.

Project Challenges

What did we learn?

There were many challenges to overcome when it came to developing this game as it was the team's first time doing a game jam, it was also my first foray into different aspects of game design I had never participated in before, particularly in 2D level design in Unity.

Additionally, adjusting the project's scope to be operable for 2 people and factoring in responsibilities outside of the jam, were hurdles we had to tackle in the moment and with great difficulty.

Overall, the lessons learned during this game jam involved effective management of the project, whether that be the inclusion of additional developers to levy the workload, or setting time aside specifically to work on the project so as to not be distracted from achieving what was set out as an objective.
